Someone has probably said this more eloquently. Go ahead and point me (and everyone else) to that person in the comments. In the meantime, here is what I’ve been thinking, in my own clunky words:
You might be thinking there’s no use in your speaking up against recent political happenings. You’re just one person. You are not famous. You have a handful of loyal followers, sure, but maybe (you think) they don’t want to see politics from you. It’s easier not to say anything. Etc. I get it.
But here’s the way I see it.
If there are 10 people who are speaking out against the current administration, and being heard—let’s say, other politicians, celebrities, influencers—the administration can and would easily target all 10 of them. They don’t seem to be above arresting people on false charges, so, 10 people? Pretty easy to silence or at least attack 24/7.
Say there are 100 people dissenting loudly, though. Well, the administration has more work to do then, but 100 is still manageable. That’s a known list of names and they’ll start checking them off.
But if there are 1,000 people? Now it’s becoming a headache for them. They’re starting to have their hands full.
10,000 people? 100,000 people? Oof. Now they’re trying to herd cats for sure. They may send in the National Guard now and then, but logistically speaking, even knowing who all 100,000 dissenting voices are is starting to slip out of their realm of ability.
Now imagine there are 1 million people speaking out.
10 million.
100 million.
If 100 million of us in America are speaking up, protesting, resisting, doing good—taking turns at it, not on any schedule, just whenever we can—then, friends, we can turn the tide.
So essentially I’m just asking: can you be one of the 100 million? Speak up a little? Donate a little? Protest a little? Do your good in your own little way? Inspire your friends just a little, so that they might become one of the 100 million too?
You don’t have to be a superstar influencer, or write a whole book about the topic, or organize a whole fundraiser. We just need as many of the people as possible to take a stand. Make it clear what the majority of this country believes and wants. Add your voice.
“For once in your life, take a stand with pride
I don’t understand how you stand to the side.”
